WALTER ROY NEWLON

Walter Roy Newlon of Logan, age 81, passed away Monday, August 10, 2009 at Hocking Valley Community Hospital, Logan, Ohio. 

He was born August 19, 1927 in Lawford, West Virginia to the late Walter and Ola Chloe (Davis) Newlon.

Walter was a 40-year member of First Baptist Church of Logan, Ohio where he was an ordained deacon and Sunday school teacher.

Mr. Newlon graduated from Harrisville High School in West Virginia. He served as sergeant in the United States Air Force, where he spent three years on active duty, including time overseas during the Korean War.  He specialized in the repair of aircraft electronic countermeasures.

Walter received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Indiana Technical College in 1957, and a Master's of Education from Ohio University in 1979. 

He was formerly employed as an electrical engineer at North American Rockwell, Westinghouse, and Industrial Nucleonics.  He retired in 1988 after a 20-year career as a professor at Hocking College, and enjoyed woodcarving, gardening, reading, bird watching, and math puzzles. 

Walter is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Dorothy Louise Newlon of Logan, Ohio; son, Walter Roy (Donna) Newlon, Jr. of Marietta; daughter, Donna Jean (Dan) Kochensparger of Groveport; four grandchildren, Brian Andrew Newlon, Amanda Nichole Newlon, Dustin Tyler Kochensparger, and Danielle Michaela Kochensparger; four brothers, David Robert (Dorothy) Newlon, Denzil Ray (Ruby)  Newlon, Don Keith (Irene) Newlon, Denver O'Neil (Patty) Newlon; four sisters, Violet Cowan, Viola  (Bill) Bunner, Clareth Haddox, and Cletha (Gerald) Bartlett; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law George Cowan and Daniel Haddox, and grandson Derek Michael Kochensparger. 

Friends may call at from 2-4 and 6-8pm Thursday, August 13, 2009 at the funeral home.

Funeral Service will be held at 10:00am August 14, 2009 at Roberts Funeral Home, Logan, Ohio with Reverend Kenneth A. Kidd officiating. 

Burial will be in Knollwood Cemetery, Falls Township, Hocking County, Ohio where a Military Service will be conducted by the Hocking County Honor Guard.
