Donald "Don" Gable Obituary

Donald “Don” Francis Gable, aged 92 of Logan, Ohio, passed away at home on Thursday, November 23, 2023.

Born August 7, 1931 in Bremen, Ohio, he was the son of the late Francis Joseph and Coletta (Noll) Gabele. Following the untimely death of his mother, he was raised by his paternal grandparents in New Lexington, Ohio. He graduated from St. Charles Preparatory School in 1949.

Don was a United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving with the 772nd Military Police Battalion. Following his service, he worked as an office manager for the Former Logan Carborundum Company for 27 years. He then worked for Hocking College for 18 years before retiring. A lifelong Catholic, for most of his life he was a committed member of St. John Catholic Church in Logan, Ohio, where he became a member of the Knights of Columbus St. James Council #2299 in 1953 and served in all local offices and as a state deputy. Don was also a 4th Degree member of the Bishop Fenwick Assembly #812 in Lancaster, Ohio. He served as a member of the parish council and as the president of St. John’ school board for two years, as well as various other positions.

Don was a dedicated volunteer who believed in giving back. For this reason, after retiring, he served on the Board of Trustees of the Hocking College Foundation, several years as President. He also served on the Hocking County Metropolitan Housing Commission, the Civil Service Commission for ten years, and with the Red Cross, United Way, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts. He was also a member of the American Legion, NRA, AMAC, Hocking County Historical Society, Fish and Game, and the Heritage Foundation. On taking up his final residence he served many years on the Edgehill Condominium Association, most of those years as president or treasurer.

Don took a great deal of pride in his children and grandchildren and was thrilled to be able to meet his great-granddaughter. Those around him enjoyed his sense of humor. His last statement was “I tried”, and his wife replied, “I know, you’re very trying”.

Don is survived by his loving wife, Vera Ellen (Bickett) Gable; sons, Kevin Patrick (Pat) Gable of Corvallis, Oregon and Eric “Ricky” Thomas (Annemarie) Gable of Weymouth, Massachusetts; daughter, Sara “Sally” Lynne (George M.) Lynch of Logan, Ohio; grandchildren, Caroline and Thomas Gable of Weymouth, Massachusetts, Stephanie Sadler of Logan, Ohio, and Selena Sadler (Justin Cone) of Lancaster, Ohio; great-granddaughter, Delilah Rose Cone; brother, Robert (Adelaide Nash) Gabele; brother and sister-in-law, Ann and Robert Williams, and nieces, Jennifer (Garth) Geist and her children Jonathan, Caroline, and Matthew, and Kerry (Scott) Stanley and her children, Alyssa and Jake.

Besides his parents, Don was preceded in death by his stepson, Frederick McLeod Ervin III in 2011; and his brother, Richard (Dick) Gabele of Scottsdale, Arizona.
