George Bernard Johnson, aged 97 of Logan, Ohio passed away on Friday, May 30, 2025 at Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster, Ohio.
Born June 10, 1927 in Orbiston, Ohio, he was the son of the late George Walter and Mollie Mae (Tolliver) Johnson.
During life, George was a Professor Emeritus at Hocking College. He was a United States Army World War II Veteran, having served with the 11th Airborne Division from 1945 to 1947, and was amongst the first occupation troops to enter Japan at the conclusion of the war. George then worked at BancOhio National Bank in Logan, Ohio before retiring and pursuing studies in Egyptology, eventually becoming a contributing editor to KMT Journal of Ancient Egypt and making numerous travels to Egypt where he worked on several archaeological sites. He had previously studied at Ohio State University, Ohio University, the American Institute of Banking, and Johns Hopkins University. George was also a former member of the Board of Directors of the Hocking County Historical Society.
George is survived by his loving wife, Martha Ann (Lehman) Johnson; sons, Dr. George Warner (Jeanne) Johnson of Logan, Ohio and Mark Richard (Sandy) Johnson of Parma, Ohio; daughter, Jennifer Jay (George) Woollacott of Bellefontaine, Ohio; twelve grandchildren, Melissa, George C., Bryan M., Mark H., Anne, Sara, Lora, Adam, Sandy, Heather, Myriah, and Andrea; and numerous beloved great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Aside from his parents, George was preceded in death by his daughter, Ann Johnson; sister, LaDonna Johnson; and brother, Charles Roger Johnson.
A funeral service celebrated by his loving family will be held at the Roberts Funeral Home in Logan, Ohio at 1 PM on Tuesday, June 3, 2025. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Logan, Ohio, where a graveside military service will be performed by the Hocking County Honor Guard.
Visitation will be held from 11 AM until time of service on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.
In lieu of flowers, the Johnson family suggests donations in George's memory may be made to the Hocking County Historical Society, 64 North Culver Street, Logan, OH 43138.
