Harold Wilson Obituary

Harold Denton Wilson, aged 87 of Logan, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster, Ohio following an unexpected illness.

Born July 17, 1934 in Whiskey Hollow, Perry County, Ohio, he was the son of the late Raymond Litt and Margaret Laura Ann (Yantes) Wilson.

Harold spent his life for the welfare of his country. When he was 17 years old, he joined the United States Marine Corps, where he was stationed on the DMZ Boundary. Following the tour, he returned to Hocking County for three years. While living here, he met and married his wife-to-be Evelyn “Kay’ Thrush.

He was asked to start a Boy Scout troop and became the first Scout Master of Troop 395 in Gore, Ohio in 1958, a troop that is still active today.

But the call of the Marines still called to him and he rejoined the Corps. He hand-painted his old car and the family left to start a life of military service. The first several years were spent on the East Coast, followed by tours in the Philippines and Okinawa. The following years were spent on the West Coast and a trip to Vietnam.

Harold served his time in the Marines as a O161 postal clerk. His last duty station was served at Camp Smith, Hawaii where he was the MCPC in Charge for all Marines in the Asian Theatre. He retired as a Master Sgt. and the family returned to Logan in 1977.

Harold was the Commander of the Hocking County Parades for many years and also as the Commander of the Hocking County Honor Guard. He was the person who spearheaded the Military Flags in Worthington Park, thanks to contributions by many donors. Harold was a member of and past commander of the Lawrence N. Helber American Legion Post 78. He was a living example of the saying “Once a Marine, always a Marine”.

Harold and Kay celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on May 25, just six days before his death. The last two days of his life were spent in military uniform celebrating the Memorial Day events.

Harold is survived by his wife Kay; one son, Paul Raymond (Karen) Wilson of Madria, Ohio; three daughters, Denise Kay (Richard) Hazlett of Beavercreek, Ohio, Diane Ruth Lightfoot of Lancaster, Ohio and Patricia Edith (Phillip) Lightfoot of Logan, Ohio; 7 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Mervin Wilson of Columbus, Ohio and James (Sylvia) Wilson of Lancaster; two sisters, Nellie Orene Harvey and Ruth Ann Hawkins, both of Logan; and many others.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael; brother, Roy Ray Wilson; and sisters, Velma Goss and Linda Byrd.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at Roberts Funeral Home-Logan with Pastor Stephen R. Hubbard officiating.

Burial will follow in New Fairview Memorial Gardens- Good Hope Twp., Hocking Co., Ohio where a Military Graveside Service will be conducted by the Hocking County Honor Guard.
