Mary Helber Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Helber, aged 87 of Logan, Ohio passed away peacefully on Monday, November 28, 2022 at her residence.

 

Born January 22, 1935 in Logan, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Charles Valentine and Angie Elizabeth (Ball) Christman.

 

Mary retired from Logan-Hocking Schools following 30 years of teaching the 4th grade at Central Elementary School. She worked at the telephone company in the 1950’s and as a sales clerk at Luckoff’s Department Store. Mary then entered the Cadet Program at Ohio University- Lancaster and became a teacher. In 1969 she received her Master’s Degree from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.

 

Mary was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Logan and the Delta Gamma Teachers Society. She was inducted into the LEA Educators Hall of Fame in 2003 and received the Martha Holden Jennings Scholar Award as an elite teacher in public school systems. Mary loved to travel and spending time with her family and three cats, Princess, Blackie and Missy.

 

She is survived by her loving husband, William Neal “Bill” Helber; two sons, Charles William “Chuck” (Becky) Helber of Hide-A-Way Hills, Ohio and James Edward “Jim” (Bonnie Lowman) Helber of Covington, Georgia; two daughters, Carol Ann (Dale) Weiler of Enterprise, Alabama and Angela Marie Helber of Logan, Ohio; and 7 grandchildren, Chad and Sean Weiler, Chuckie and Jennifer Helber, Erika Schmitzer, and Jimmy and Dustin James Helber.

 

Besides her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her sister, Martha Graf.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM, Friday, December 2, 2022 at St. John Catholic Church in Logan with Fr. Stephen L. Krile officiating.

 

Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Logan, Ohio.

 

Visitation will be held from 4-7 PM Thursday, December 1, 2022 at Roberts Funeral Home in Logan, Ohio.
