Richard “Dick” Eugene Harden, known fondly as “Whip” to many, of Logan, Ohio, passed away at home on Thursday, November 16, 2023 at the age of 87.
Born November 22, 1935 in Logan, Ohio, he was the son of the late Woodrow Harden and Dorothy (Helber) Wise.
Dick was a graduate of Logan High School Class of 1955 where he excelled as an athlete, winning honors as a football and basketball player. He also worked at his family’s store, Harden and Helber Supermarket. He then worked as a laborer for the Carborundum Company in Logan, Ohio before retiring. He also retired as a custodian for the Logan-Hocking School District. Dick was also a co-owner of Lake Logan Campgrounds for 15 years. A proud member of the Ohio National Guard, Dick was the first member of his Logan unit to retire with 20 years of service. Dick also had a great love for sports, coaching little league softball, industrial junior high flag football, and receiving coach-of-the-year honors for his time coaching little league baseball. An avid golfer, he had 5 lifetime holes-in-one. Dick was a proud member of Kline Memorial Global Methodist Church in Enterprise, Ohio for 40 years.
Dick is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Jolene Ann (Gastin) Harden; daughters, Joelle (Roger) Giffin and Jennifer (Craig) Phillips; brother-in-law, Don (Sharon) Keplar; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his son, Richard (Rich) Harden in 2016; and his father and mother-in-law, Art and Marie Keplar.
A funeral service officiated by Pastor Eli Shaw will take place at 1 PM on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at New Fairview Cemetery Chapel in Good-Hope Township, Hocking County, Ohio. Entombment will follow at New Fairview Mausoleum.
Visitation for Dick will take place on Monday, November 20, 2023 from 4-7 at Roberts Funeral Home in Logan, Ohio.
